What drives the cost of an automatic gate
Five categories drive almost all of the price difference between two automatic gate quotes:
- Gate type — slide vs. swing vs. barrier arm, and single vs. dual leaf
- Operator duty class — residential, light commercial, commercial continuous duty
- Access control — keypads, card readers, mobile credentials, telephone entry, intercom
- Site infrastructure — power, conduit, foundation, vehicle loops, photo eyes, safety edges
- Integration — connection to surveillance, monitoring, and existing access control databases
Approximate ranges
These ranges are typical for Central Florida and Tampa Bay properties at the time of writing. Specific quotes always require a site assessment.
- Residential single swing gate, basic operator, keypad: ~$8,000–$14,000
- Residential dual swing gate, operator, keypad, intercom: ~$12,000–$22,000
- Commercial slide gate, continuous-duty operator, access control: ~$18,000–$35,000+
- Estate gate with custom panel, integrated camera and intercom: $25,000–$60,000+
What you should not skimp on
Two categories cause the most repeat service calls when undersized: operator duty class and safety devices. An undersized operator on a heavy gate fails fast in Florida heat. Skipping photo eyes, loop detectors, or safety edges turns a routine service call into a liability event.
When you can spend less
If the existing gate panel is structurally sound and rated to be automated, an operator-only retrofit can be a meaningful cost saving. A careful inspection of rollers, hinges, posts, and panel weight comes before that recommendation, not after.
